Temporal Mandibular Joint (TMJ) - Massage

Did you know that as much as 10% of the population in North America could be suffering from headaches and migraines as a result of grinding their teeth (Bruxism), clenching during sleep or simply excessive chewing gum use or overworking the muscles of the jaw?
Ever rubbed your temples during a headache on instinct? The trigeminal nerve, which controls facial muscles, can cause referred pain from the body or jaw, leading to headaches or migraines!
Now while the mechanism of migraine is still poorly understood, Recent research suggests that stimulating the trigeminal nerve with a TENS device can significantly relieve migraines by interfering with the trigeminal nerve pathway. This relief is temporary and depends on the device being active. In our massage sessions, we combine various techniques like masseter muscle stretches, guided-vibro-percussive therapy, and facial massages to address the root causes of pain. and give you post-care advice on how to use the TENS machine (Available for purchase at any Pharmacy) to manage many types of headaches, provided they are the types dependent on the trigeminal nerve pathway, which anecdotally, is MANY.
And it feels amazing!
Just what is the TMJ and what does it do?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint connecting your jawbone to your skull, allowing for movement essential for activities like chewing, speaking, and yawning. It's a complex hinge joint with a disc that cushions the movement, facilitating smooth jaw function.

Additional interesting information about the TMJ:
There are other known conditions that involve the trigeminal nerve, and just to give you a sense of how many are truly suffering from challenging headaches and migraines as a result of the trigeminal nerve pathway, learn about the following conditions:
#1 - Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders: Dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint, which is innervated by the trigeminal nerve, can lead to facial pain, jaw pain, and headaches, particularly tension-type headaches.
#2 - Trigeminal Neuralgia: This is a disorder characterized by sudden, severe, and recurrent episodes of facial pain along the trigeminal nerve. While the pain itself is not typically described as a headache, it can be extremely intense and debilitating.
#3 - Trigeminal Neuropathy: Damage or dysfunction of the trigeminal nerve can result in neuropathic pain, which may manifest as facial pain or headaches.
#4 - Trigeminal Autonomic Cephalalgias (TACs): These are a group of headache disorders characterized by severe, unilateral head pain along with autonomic symptoms such as tearing, nasal congestion, or eyelid drooping. Examples include cluster headaches and paroxysmal hemicrania, which can involve trigeminal nerve involvement.
#5 - Sinusitis: Inflammation or infection of the sinuses can cause facial pain or pressure, which may be perceived as headaches. The trigeminal nerve provides sensation to the sinuses, and inflammation in this area can trigger pain signals.
#6 - Dental Issues: Problems such as tooth infections, abscesses, or dental trauma can also lead to facial pain or headaches, as the trigeminal nerve innervates.
